CUSTOMER: A Global Bio-Science Company
Business Needs: A multinational company headquartered in Japan needed
a Decision Management System to support its operations around the world and in multiple
business units. The system needed to take a complex cross-functional authorization
matrix and a cumbersome email and paper process and make it easy to use and configurable. The system had to be secure and accessible via the internet and support
the initiation, deliberation, approval and auditing of key decisions that involved
executives at the highest levels in the business. Additionally, the application
needed to accommodate the selection of the multiple contributors to the decision,
attachment of supporting documentation, notification of process participants, re-work
as necessary, and archiving of all decisions.
Solution and Approach: Aspenware and the client team discussed the users
of the system and developed a preliminary set of uses cases and a proposed architectural
approach that would meet the business needs for anytime, anywhere access. Based
on the initial discussions Aspenware built a prototype of the system for a limited
number of decisions and levels of approval. From the prototype the client understood
more clearly the extensibility and scalability of the application. The application
was originally built in ASP.Net 1.1 and later re-factored in to ASP.Net 2.0 and
incorporates numerous elements of the Aspenware Smart Enterprise Suite. It is housed
at the Aspenware hosting center in Denver, Colorado and is used by businesses units
around the world. Aspenware’s architecture centric approach, business understanding
and iterative approach allowed the application to be conceived, built, tested, delivered
and deployed without a face-to-face meeting with the team from Japan.
